Actively watching and looking at my browsing info? Not really.

Saving all of my data and monitoring aggregate data for any alerts to abide by whatever legal nonsense? Absolutely.

They can only see what domains you’re visiting, nothing more. This is why VPNs work. However, you’re not putting your trust in the VPN to not spy on what domains you’re visiting.

    • Here in the states it’s recognized (at least by the information technology literate sector) that deep packet inspection crosses a line. I can’t speak to the justice system in Canada, but over here calls to require ISP and telecommunications services to govern end-user traffic has alway been overruled…eventually.

If nothing else, it creates a lot of extra work and infrastructure for the ISPs

Your isp already spies on you, but now they’re under a court order to block certain ip addresses. If you’re pirating, you should be paying for a good vpn.

As much as they can yeah. I switch off ISP DNS as fast as possible but outside of that, yeah they have logs of where I go and what I do.

Same as carriers. Everyone is freaking out about Facebook privacy or some app spying on you, but your carrier logs all your calls and texts and location data and has quite a bit of pedigree data from your address, banking info and other financial details. They know far more than Apple or Google or Microsoft.

They’ll spy on you so long as there is a legal firm or so that is complaining about your pirating habits.

Use. A. VPN. For christ sakes.

The law requires them to block certain IP ranges. IP addresses are a fundamental part of routing internet traffic, and unless you are connecting over a nested tunnel, are sent entirely in the clear.

This would be like a law requiring the post office decline to deliver any mail addressed to Iran, and then worrying that the Postal Service is going to “spy” on you by looking at the destination address you write on the envelope. They already do, as it is an intrinsic part of providing the service you’re requesting, which is delivering mail to the address you wrote.

Just out of curiosity, what exactly would they even see? Destination sure but actual data? Probably not. There is almost no communication that is unencrypted, hence why all sites use https these days. Sure they can see it but without the proper certificate and handshake the data would be useless. If you use a VPN then they will only see all your data directed to that source. As long as people take the bare minimum steps they can protect themselves from being spied on. I don’t even use the ISP’s DNS servers either which is less data as well.

I think a bigger part is educating people on how the internet works which could help people be less paranoid.

Well, crap. I just bought an android box and have been looking for an IPTV provider. I have no interest in sports and don’t want to have to bother with crypto. Are there any good options for “unverified” services?
