  • TIL- Muliebrity (Muliebrity means womanly nature or qualities, or the condition of being a woman. It comes from Latin muliēbris, derived from mulier, meaning woman)

Feel about the same as your case. Every one has preferred pronouns, I like to point out to conservative relatives that “sir” and “ma’am” is just another form that they learned growing up for certain individuals. It’s just basic manners.

  • I have loved ones that I very much care for that I have to do these mental dances with. Certain groups or cultures of people may have a bias towards only looking at scientific evidence that promotes their hypothesis, well established institutions can sometimes be “stuck in a rut” but I would include people like graham hancock in that group. Science is a beautiful thing though, new data and experiments doesn’t care what your belief structure is. Your germ theory is a beautiful example where thought was put into a hypothesis and was slowly formed over time with new evidence. Religious and spiritual aspects do not require this with belief. What was the last study done by a religious scholar that a deity exists? What was the last religious text that was changed due to discoveries or experiments that were done?

It’s important to realize that scientific study is a rigorous system and not everyone follows it to the best of their ability. Slamming a label on like “whether you accept and believe scientific discoveries remains a subjective choice” is not a valid statement.

The basic difference between objective and subjective information is that objective information is based on facts, while subjective information, or a subjective perspective, is based on opinion, emotion, or feelings.

The very fact that you’re using subjective choice to look at scientific data means you’re not actually following the scientific method (explains how something goes from hypothesis-theory-law). It’s ok to have a hypothesis that’s different from mainstream, it’s not ok to declare being subjugated because you aren’t following the method to show your data and claiming it must be a law.

If you’re going to dance around the science/spiritual circles you need to have proper respect for both parties when communicating directly (if you want everyone to understand what you’re talking about). One example is “Energy”, means two very different things when talking to an electrical engineer or a new age “star child”. The distinction needs to be made for sound scientific communication that doesn’t impede someones belief.

I highly suggest checking out “The Hidden Story That Defines Our Modern Era” from Like Stories of Old. This is a prime example of how you can bind modern communication and stepping into the religious/belief structures of our history while maintaining respect for everyone.

  • I’ve been seeing gross stuff all around about voting records. For context that matters, I live in NC. It’s fucking non-stop from all sides. I’m trying to find the ad I saw with a relative while over at his place that played on Tubi that he was watching. I just heard it in the background while I was cooking and was flabbergasted. This ad was very clearly anti-Trump but then commented on your vote is registered and can be seen (completely false) with a threatening overtone. It went by so fast, both of us asked wtf just came on and I assured him his vote is private but they can check “IF” you voted (he’s an independent and primed to believe the worse of all scenarios thanks to social media and news, but is mindful when he thinks for himself).

I doubt it was anything like the actual DNC making the ad, was more than likely a superpac. Trying to find an obscure ad that plays on streaming in a localized area isn’t as easy as it used to be. Doesn’t help that youtube and ddg just gives me a bunch of useless shit that aren’t even ads or commercials (who’da thunk it would be hard to SEARCH for a commercial to watch). Regardless, every single ad used in this context needs fined into oblivion and the people involved need jail time so others don’t continue it on for every election to come.

Also, the downvotes for you are undeserved. There’s some fucking sycophant political worshipers that either got shipped into here or have drank the kool-aid this election cycle. They literally cannot hear anything negative without becoming triggered. It’s really setting up the next administration to not have to do anything but wait another 3 years and proclaim democracy is in trouble again.

  • allow me to be the batshit representative from lemmy.ml to argue with you :P

Honestly, I just hate the instance bashing. Most people didn’t have a real informed “choice” when it comes to their first instance. This seemed like an instance with good uptime and connectivity to me compared to the single admin instance I had before, the only factor that really matters to me. I see what you’re saying about % of users, but those people exist on every instance and like you said, they can just jump over and make a new account. If I’m being judged by the .ml next to my name and not the content of my reply, then they were really never going to listen to anything I had to say regardless, so I’ve decided to stay with this instance.

I think you’re seeing more arguments on those instances because it’s more of a melting pot. People who all agree with each other’s perspectives and have similar life experience aren’t going to have a lot to discuss besides patting each other on the backs and talking about subtle nuances of the subject matter. I do agree with your entire premise of the downvotes, which is why I’m replying to begin with. I like the thought of a downvote system, something that would hinder off-topic or abusive material, but it’s just horribly abused by users.

A proper system would see two competing articles and the one which provides the most information with a legible format would be upvoted the most. Now it’s which one has the most comments, what user uploaded it, what website was the article published on, which headline is catchier regardless of the article’s own words being taken out of context, what instance/community is this being posted on, etc etc.

Maybe I’m just confused and using this site and reddit wrong. From my conversations about downvotes, my understanding is less time is being spent on reading the article or links, and more just running through upvoting/downvoting like it’s tinder matches. I don’t get it because it’s not like youtube suggestions where you’re creating an algorithm for your likes/dislikes. You’re just creating a general feed of populace attention-seeking content and creating the pattern for a hive mind to form.

I think any of the many solutions would be a step forward, votes being public (all your other interactions are public/not done anonymously, and likes/dislikes has no commonality to democratic voting so people need to stop conflating the two), blocking any downvotes like lemmynsfw.com successfully implemented (you can still report off topic, etc), can only dowvote in joined communities or content you’ve engaged with, and many other ideas. All sorts of solutions that will stop us from going down the same path as Reddit, luckily we have instances to experiment different approaches with that we can point to for data in the future. I guess I prefer more of a forum style but those always get overtaken by zealous admins/site ideology and eventually hyperactive community members meaning it’s hard or not worth the effort to actually engage with the drama surrounding the subject you want to discuss (even some shroom forums get like this, absolutely crazy).

  • I’m not sure on the technical aspect but I think “instance blocking” should be an OPT-IN message sent to users of the instance. For example, say lemmy.world wanted to block lemmy.ml, hexbear, and reddthat. Each instance is added to a “Suggested blocked instance” setting in your profile and a message is sent to the user notifying them the opt-in option is available. Could have a whole list with descriptions besides the instances for why the suggested block option is there. Users would be informed with an actionable option and not automatically opted in. Could just be a toggle-able switch list in user settings.

  • If you’re not being purposefully obtuse I’ll save you the time from what the argument is. Wealth of his magnitude is a detriment to society, doesn’t matter if he’s saint Joseph or the pope. You’re saying “he’s the best kind”, deflecting from all of them being bad. If you don’t see that, then it’s fine. Just an economical opinion on where to go with society from the stalemate we seem to be in regarding workers and compensation.

I do feel like you’re being blind about the nepotism definitions though, you don’t need 200 billion from a family slush fund to qualify. The very act of what their parent’s profession is changes networking and exposure opportunities. Doesn’t matter if Daddy has ethical values, the name recognition and reputation you’re proclaiming gives an advantage.

  • Hopefully wikipedia recognizes this as the official Canary in the Chrome mine. I was first impressed with chrome book because of seeing them used for education, getting my own laptop during school would’ve been mindblowing to kid me. I was unimpressed with the strangulation process of the OS but again shocked when they added a linux boot mode. There needs to be better alternatives by now, I would be ok with an OS developed by the department of education in conjunction with higher educational institutions. Could have a decent non-profit approach to a browser and ad blockers could legitimately be built in as a “protect the children” aim of approach.

  • But that complacency isn’t happening to everyone. A lot are just festering, slowly digesting more incredulous and radical propaganda/influencers. Every ones base reality of the events that are happening over the country is getting completely skewed by the new types of outlets like tiktok that they flock to because of the lack of accountability by our elected officials and journalists/news organizations.

During just this last hurricane Helene I’ve heard more anger and outrage about the government than anything to actually do about what’s been hit or what the people and rescue workers are actually doing. This is how we get mass shooters and assassinations becoming more prolific, people aren’t just complaining and going about their day. They’re nodding and grinding their teeth while smiling.

  • In the link comment I provided I did state it was a far off miracle. But, my focus was less on 3rd parties or electoral reform, it was directly related to the “National Committees” that exists. I’m all for state parties, reminds me of when Bell was split into it’s different areas. But on a national level I wonder if it can be argued that it’s so far removed from focusing on “political ideologies of it’s group” to becoming a service provider for selected candidates. You could look at the committee’s structures, are they even following their own political ideologies, what type of controlling power they have, etc etc.

  • This question was less about electoral practices are more about a single entity controlling the national level of it’s party. I feel the function of these at a national level, can be argued as an organization/company which controls the market for their party. What “political party” protections are there and what distinguishes them from any other organization that could be regulated by the anti-competitive laws. I feel they are political in name only, and can truly be academically and legally viewed as a business (which supports mainly political clients).

  • Looking at an entire political spectrum and there being only a Duopoly is heart breaking. But I meant more like each one is a true “business monopoly” for it’s own perspective market/party. Controlling exposure, funding, data, candidate selection, being generally a lobbying middleman group, at what point does this become less a “political ideological group” and more a business organization that focuses heavily on political candidates? (like a sign manufacturer is technically making political content, but they’re still just a business, they’re both providing a service or product to individuals).

This is not so much a focus on political parties or ideologies, but more the NC (national committee) portion of it. I understand state political parties. But when expanded to the national committee’s of those parties, how are those organizations not considered a monopoly for their parties centralizing and controlling the state level and have completely overtaken national decisions which can effect the state level as well.
