JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Fediverse@lemmy.world•The basics of the Fediverse. Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Reddit, ... vs the Fediverse. What do you think?English1·3 months agoLove it! I’ve saved a copy, because I think it’ll make future explanations a lot easier. Thanks!
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•EU OS: A Fedora-based distro 'for the public sector'English222·4 months agoAs much as I love what they’re doing, tieing an OS to a specific region via name seems like the opposite of Open Source values… Then again, I suppose it could just be forked into a more generalized version
Try an uncensored version, because everyone knows Communists hate Hexadecimal /s

JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is changing what is written in booksEnglish2·4 months agoAppreciate it! The last audiobook I picked up from Libro is Kara Swisher’s “Burn Book”. Not sure if it’s your thing, but was totally worth it for understanding more personal context around the big Tech CEOs from the last 25 years.
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.world•UK gives royal welcome to Zelenskyy after White House meltdownEnglish358·4 months agoThe BRICS partnership (Of which China is a key player) encompasses almost 50% of the world’s population, and their Belt and Road initiative is a soft power wet dream.
The world has actually already become multipolar, but most Western media won’t make that clear because they are still stuck in the old Colonial mindset of Captialist-Democracy = 100% civilized / Not-a-Capitalist-Democracy = 100% backwards.

JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Sergey Brin says AGI is within reach if Googlers work 60-hour weeksEnglish171·4 months agoI highly recommend Kara Swisher’s recent book “Burn Book” for insights into the Tech lads like Brin, etc, as she’s known most of them since the 90s.
Really helps contextualize the crazy cocktail of engineering/commercial power with general naivety a lot of these guys have going.
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.world•Diplomacy dies on live TV as Trump and Vance gang up to bully Ukraine leaderEnglish722·4 months ago“Democracy dies on live TV” - wow that headline hits hard.
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does it feel like evil is winning globally?English33·4 months agoI would just like to push back and say that the Internet was an open public project, and it has helped countless people across the world. Every single problematic tech that people are pointing to at the moment are closed-source commercial projects.
That is Capitalism at work.

JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is changing what is written in booksEnglish91·5 months agoIf you’re into audiobooks, I strongly recommend libro.fm instead - it’s all DRM free downloads, so you never lose access.
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Can we please, PLEASE for gods sake just all agree that arch is not and will never be a good beginner distro no matter how many times you fork it?English2·5 months agoBut but but SteamOS!
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon’s killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle booksEnglish11·5 months agoDefinitely switch to alternatives from Amazon. They treat their authors abhorrently too. I’ve personally been super happy with libro.fm for Audiobooks (essentially Audible, but you can download the audiobooks DRM-free)
JOMusic@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Time to get serious with E2E encrypted messagingEnglish9·5 months agoAt least (to my knowledge) the Signal messages are decrypted on the client end, so buying the company doesn’t give them automatic access to messages.
Having said that, I’m sure a hostile new owner could update the app to decrypt and then send the messages as plaintext to the servers if they wanted…
I listened to the whole audiobook in a day - one of the best books I’ve purchased recently. As someone who has been very much into the techno-futurists over the last 15 years, I would suggest this book, along with Manu Saadia’s Trekonomics for a much needed reality-check.
