Pixelfed looks more or less like Instagram to my eyes and there are alternatives frontends for mastodon. As well as a lot of people uses smartphone apps which mastodon has a few.

Mastodon has been going for almost ten years, it’s proven reliabile but people preferred the more clearly twitter clone blusky by a big American company.

Apart from the drama another linked it’s “just” an android app compared to Osmand and Cartes that can work on mobile and desktop.

As a Google Maps alternative I could recommend Osmand and Cartes.
