Professionally/commercially they’re MILES ahead of Red hat, Oracle, or Suse.

Personally/free they do weird shit that usually doesn’t seem make sense on its surface if you’re not getting paid to learn it.

Take snaps for example: flatpak/app image/whatever makes more sense if you only care nothing beyond getting/running the software; but in a professional setting where you need third party info for something like an sbom or some sort of industry compliancy, snaps make it easy.

  • i wish i had advice to offer you, but i’m in a similar boat with my senior cat.

i was devastated when my senior dogs & cats passed away and i was able to weather it each time it happened thanks entirely to my other pets commiserating with me; my 16 year old cat is the last one left alive and he’s been by my side through all of those deaths.

the bar for approval to get another pet from the shelter is far too high; too long; and too invasive were i live for my attempts to be successful, so i’ve only adopted pets that i found on the streets and those that others wanted to surrender to the shelter.

i’m on the spectrum which makes human relationships very difficult to create and maintain, which means that my cat is my life.

i cannot express how much i dread the inevitable day that i have to see him suffering once he gets ill and i have to decide to it’s best to end his life.

i hope you’re better prepared than i am.

  • i’m too autistic to care about other people’s feelings when i share my political opinions and my post history is littered with it especially since my life has also been heavily impacted by clinton enacting don’t ask don’t tell; biden extolling executive order 10450; clinton, bush jr, obama, trump and biden’s immigration policies; the country’s student loan debt situation created by biden’s student loan act; biden using the inflation reduction action to block truly affordable EV’s; and biden banning tiktok.

i’ll save you the trouble of going through my post history and give you a tldr: both clintons & biden are shit stains in this country’s political history and have fucked me over much more than trump could ever fantasize about; even with project 2025. i also wish kamala was better so that i could vote for her, but she’s seems hellbent on make sure that i don’t; so i’m 99% sure i’ll end up voting for the green party again as i have done in the past 12 years, but this time around i’m deeply touched that nearly all of the people who know and care about me will be doing something similar thanks to my proselytizing.

if that were all they touched, it would be fine; but i’ve lost track of the number of times i setup a linux system for newbies and got emergency phone calls that the install was broken only to discover that they clicked on some kde setting somewhere that they both forgot about and didn’t understand.

it’s sort of like people deleting the windows folder on a windows system because they don’t think that they use it.

If it’s you’re first install go with gnome since it’s intentionally simplified.

You WILL get lost in all of the customization options that are available in KDE and most xwindows environments if you have no experience w anything besides Windows or Mac

I’ve installed Gentoo, fedora and Debian on powerpc and Intel Macs a couple times in my past.

The Intel Macs were no more difficult than Windows machines and the powerpc Macs required an extra step for yaboot and time to fiddle with an of the services; but still not difficult.

  • google and nvidia both do.

i don’t know if it’s still true; but they gave their employees 2 computers where their workstations were usually linux and their laptops were either linux or mac if they were engineers. it was their choice to decide what to get; but they usually went along with whatever their peers where using; except for non-engineers who always wanted macs no matter what, even if their windows machines were newer and better by miles.
