gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Technology@beehaw.org•Can We Build Tech That Is Not Oppressive?7·5 months agoYes, it is possible. I think it will be something like this:
where proprietary software will eventually be replaced by FOSS software. it just takes a while (Linux was released in 1991).
also, for social media, it’s not so much about the software used, more about who controls it, and hosting plays a significant part in this. the question is, how do we put up an organization large enough to actually sustain that many users?
who pays for image/short video upload for a billion people? small instances on the fediverse already cost real money. feddit.org has 1000 users and reportedly already costs $1000/month to host, IIRC (which seems expensive, even to me, anyways), and catbox.moe, which is a donation-funded service also costs around $1000 (says so on their website). that number would obviously increase sharply if there were more users. So: who pays for it?
gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Just curious but are we heading towards an "eat the rich" society?5·7 months agoThank you for taking the patience to put this into words so nicely! I really appreciate your perspective. Maybe I was being too rude calling Republicans “dumb”, I apologize. I guess I’m just as angry as many other people at seeing the proposed Republican plans (especially “slashing public spending” a.k.a. reducing social welfare) and seeing people actually vote for that.
Yeah, people in the US want change. I’m not sure what would be a productive and viable proposal that doesn’t completely fuck up the country. I’m European and have a non-interference policy for myself when it comes to the internals of the US. In other words, I don’t want to meddle too much with what’s going on in the US.

I guess we should be, but that’s just my personal opinion.
Realistically, no. The people have clearly expressed how dumb they are and what they desire in the November election. They want dumb Republicans, they get asshole CEOs. I don’t see it any other way.
Honestly, I believe voting is the best way to bring change about a society that wants to change. It’s just that I have given up the thought that the US wants to change in the direction that I would go. So no, it’s not gonna happen.
that makes sense, yeah
There’s one more outlier though which is Electrochemical cell, like galvanic element or voltaic pile
It was used around 1800 as a major electricity source, but I guess it quickly became uneconomical in 1866 or sth when the dynamo was invented.
Edit: wait yes, it actually says this in the second paragraph of the linked article:
The entire 19th-century electrical industry was powered by batteries related to Volta’s (e.g. the Daniell cell and Grove cell) until the advent of the dynamo (the electrical generator) in the 1870s.
So, I don’t know why you’re taking a stand for Uranium today. It used to be a good technology 30 years ago, but today it just doesn’t make any sense anymore.
First factor is cost. Renewables (Solar + Wind especially) have really really gone down in cost (see this link and this link), and the population will favor the energy source that is cheaper in the long run.
Secondly, the environmental impact of solar is really not that big. When we talk about how much CO2 solar produces, it’s mostly because that solar needs silicon and that needs energy to be purified. And that energy mostly comes from coal, gas or other non-renewables today. But guess what, as the solar revolution progresses, that emission goes down as well, so solar actually becomes more environmentally friendly over time.
tbf, we have airplanes, but most goods are still being transported over lands or seas.
Well but they’re not around anymore because the uranium inside them is all consumed by now, right?
gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?2·9 months agoI imagine the reason why comments here are more constructive is because Lemmy is perceived to have a high technicality-threshhold (you have to be somewhat familiar with technology to make an account here - even though that’s not true). That leads to only people with a high enough motivation to sign up here.
I think it’s important that we grow and find new users, not because I seek growth, but because I seek diversity. We need more people, more opinions, and more different perspectives.
gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?2·9 months agoYeah the politics is annoying at this point, it feels like 60% on the front page is politics. I’m glad when the US votes are finally over.
gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?2·9 months agoYeah, I have made the experience that most communities on the german-speaking feddit.de were great, but after that had technical issues and went down for 4 months (!), the content isn’t as good anymore and the users are more frustrating.
gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto World News@lemmy.world•No war on narcos, Mexico's new president vows as she outlines plan to reduce violenceEnglish5·9 months agoI guess crime exists due to two reasons:
- poverty exists. as long as poverty exists, people seek a way out.
- organized crime exists. it draws people in.
So, pacifying the country needs a two-sided approach. On the one side, you must show people how to live a good life without being reliant on crime for basic necessities. People must be able to support themselves without falling back on criminal organizations.
On the other hand, probably the bigger issue, is that these crime organizations have a lot of money, and demand for labour-force. that means that they actively recruit new people, and draw people in. organized crime mostly exists because there’s too much money being made on the black market by selling/trafficking drugs. So I guess that it would make sense to legalize drugs (at least to a certain extent), because every $1 spent legally when buying drugs is a $1 you take away from the black market, and therefore crime organizations.

and there’s a lot of bad articles being written because there’s a lot of authors that just want to make money from advertising, without actually caring about the content. in other words, it’s advertising’s fault that the quality of content is dropping. and ironically, it’s mostly google’s fault that advertisement on the internet got so big as it is today.

gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How modern is it to have "sympathetic" portrayals of Hell?8·9 months agoRight now I can think of the buddhist “tale of the bug”.
Two (human) friends died and were reborn. One in heaven, the other as a dung beetle (a type of bug) on a dung pile.
The guy in heaven tried to “help” his friend by going down to Earth and carrying his friend to the skies. But his friend refused, because the dung pile was now his home, and he didn’t want to leave at any cost. Only then the guy realized that it is not heaven that makes you happy, but finding the place that you’re destined for.
IMO Debian is already pretty far middle-ground. The packages are new enough for my personal usage.
i’m not particular what you would call a normal guy and i have a lot of edgy views, but my take on this is simply that the main and by far number one reason why you’re not supposed to talk to women nowadays is because social media has instilled an outright fear of men in women.
you see, women are naturally very intelligent and pick up signals, even small ones, fast. if they see a hundred social media posts a day, and even one of them says something like “men are bad, keep away from them”, they will take the warning very seriously, even though there might be not much of a good reasoning behind it. maybe whoever wrote that social media post was only a crazy christian and was saying it because she was worried about staying “pure”. there are unfortunately christian people out there who think that “morale” and stuff like “staying pure [from men flirting with women]” are more important than understanding the social needs of the people. such is religion. over the internet it spreads like crazy. that’s why the women are all afraid of men. to which i respond with this meme:
(which means as much as: the fear is artificial and instilled; look at the actual predators. it is the rich)
My advice for you is: stay careful, as there are crazy “feminists” out there, who are only looking for a “catch”. For example, they want to test their “critique” on someone, and try to hurt you simply because they’re looking for a fight. but also, you must understand that only your heart will carry you forward, so you must listen to it. it is a difficult path to walk, but maybe you can try it.
