I used to think it’d be our kids or grandkids who would find out, but its looking like it might actually be us. What a time to be alive.

Great news. Fascists shouldnt get visas to travel anywhere.
“USA, war crimes cleanup on Aisle 11, USA, cleanup on aisle 11.”
A vote for camacho is just a vote for trump

You are right. I think other countries should sanction US travelers for our governments bad actions, yes. It would wake people the eff up.
Theres far far far more anti muslim violence than anti jewish. ADL has been counting people saying mean things online as a spike in anti semitic violence. Words are not violence. Holding a sign objecting to Israeli actions are not violence. And objecting to Israel is not anti semitic.
Yep, sure does look like he’s going to win.
“They hate us for our freedoms” was such a ridiculously stupid thing for Bush to say, but people lapped it up and just assumed it was truth. Not the USA’s most impressive moment.
This will blow back way harder on Israel than America.
I dont think the US will walk away from this free of any consequences at all. The chickens will come home to roost. You dont kill that many people and leave that many affected victims and just saunter off into the sunset with no consequences whatsoever.
I feel bad for the average Joe in Ukraine, and I dont feel any need to pity Russia or Russians at all.
But it begs the question, why do we care what a minority of people think in Russia? No one here owes any Russian anything. Not Nvidia drivers, not… anything. I say we firewall the whole Russian state off from the internet and call it a day. Tired of their cheating in every sporting event, killing citizens of other countries, blowing up pipelines, and generally behaving like shitty little gangster hooligans. Is there a small number of good people there? Sure. But thats not any of our problem-- thats their problem.
I feel that many Russians are against Putler’s regime
Well thats not what any polls anywhere say. Where did you get that from? Reminds me of this saying: “Wish into one hand and shit into the other and see which one gets full first.”
Implicit in your assertion is that we can stave off this collapse and that theres plenty of time to iterate to some changes.
Consider that by 2050 we’ll need 60% more food than we produce now, and projections are that with climate change effects we’ll have no way to make that much, even if we start all eating bugs and kelp. So at the end of many of our lifetimes we’ll observe tangible impacts. 2050 is just 26 years from now. So just sit on our hands and be patient, you think?
which is what most people are trying to do
I dont agree that this is happening. Climate pledges are being abandoned. The imagination of International solutions are being abandonded for self serving ones. Even recycling in my area has been throttled way back. Internal combustion engine cars are surging back into popularity. One of the biggest possible polluting events are wars, and theres possibly a whole bunch on the horizon as Pax Americanan ends with the disolution of our soft power. We are not motivated to make progress and our political system and international reach seems to be in decline.
If you look at the trajectories we are on in multiple areas, you can see inevitabilities. I dont fault you for having hope that the whole of human society will pull it out of the fire at the last second, but I no longer beleive its in our nature to act on these threats. Americans arent even convinced climate change is real.
I still do beleive in the good will of the American people, and their ability to rebuild quickly and better. When forced to come together on a pursuit, American free thinking outpaces other international mindsets pretty reliably. Or it used to.
Anyone suggesting that societal collapse is a good outcome doesn’t really understand what societal collapse entails.
Anyone who says preserving the status quo is a viable outcome doesnt really understand how high the cost of that status quo is.
Participating in an Ethnic cleansing of a group that is 26% of the humans on the planet will end in tears for us, and pull this country inexorably rightward as we respond to its effects. Even now just a few Yemeni missiles on cargo ships in the Suez has upended Americans faith in the dems by raising prices. Thats with true pushback having not even begun yet. DNC leadership and dem voters are not taking the long view on this. Why dont you think long term and tell me what you see 8 years into the future.
Russia has said they are going to do asymetrical warfare with the west. So why should we not prepare for what they claim they will do? Russians arent owed anything by us. Not a seat at the table, not a chance to contribute to open source software, not to be listened to. Not rights beyond their borders. It doesnt matter if they are nice. Its not our job and not realistic to expend time and resources to take each individual russian’s personal measure and apply sanctions onesey twosey on the bad ones. If they dont like it they should take it up with their motherland and get it sorted. I think we should immediately shut down all visas of any kind with Russia. The fact that the US is still allowing them to vacation here is absurd.
The zionist ideology has no relation to ancient Judaism.
I dont agree. Contrast the zionists with the zealots faction toward the end of the second temple period. The zealots and the zionists are essentially the same group. The zealots genocided the whole region in their time: Roman, Greek, Arabs alike. More than a million murdered to build a “new Israel”. The Romans marched in and counter-genocided their asses.
Jewish-Roman wars [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish–Roman_wars] Kitos War [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitos_War]
Ever hear zionists bellyache about how unfair it is that they have been kicked out of countries? After the zionist rebels genocided 240,000 greeks in Cyrpus-- Rome took Cyprus back and jews were unwelcome on the island, even if they came by shipwreck, on pain of death. I think thats an understandable outcome considering how few people bring up WHY that outcome occurred.
This is exactly what people mean when they say its perilous to forget our history. This is a repeat of the jewish-roman wars, again with the genocide and land theft.
You have a very interestingly nuanced position in all this.
I’d be happy if some sort of god entity announced its existence and was interested in us and not malevolent. Why not. I’ve been wrong enough times in life that I wouldnt be surprised to be wrong again. Like you, I think its extraorinarily unlikely, especially with the reinforcement of the arc of history. In life you have to act according to the odds. If theres a .0001 chance of fish being in a pond, its not worth spending the time to fish there. I consider religion in a similar light. The odds of a god being there seem miniscule to me, and yet their followers are here all the time, and take an oversized stage for having such a miniscule chance of being correct, and they push their ideas on the rest of us, but seldom will entertain challenges to why they do these things. Like championing more reproduction but being against feeding the poor from their church kitchens (for some, not all of them).
My experiences in this regard are not average, I hope, so feel free to take what I say with whatever amojnt of salt you judge appropriate. I come from an intensely catholic upbringing. Even after my aunt was raped by a monk, who went unpunished. My parents’ generation of two large families stayed catholic even in light of that. The kids, universally, could not stay with the church upon hearing this. I think the perception of religion has gone through a generational change starting at genX, and churches broadly have not kept pace, as you alluded to. I am convinced, like you, that this is progress for humanity. I am willing to give religious people the respect for their ideas they hold dear commensurate with the liklihood of them being correct or even useful, although I deem them to be .00000000000000000001% useless compared to the chance of there being no deities involved with our affairs, and that we should own our world ourselves.
cheers, good chat.
Right, so Israel shouldnt have murdered and kicked all those people off their land during the Nakba.
