Anyway, how do we feel about the Star Trek III redesign? In TMP it was one hairless bump that was supposed to represent a spinal column, running all the way from the back over the cranium. TSFS and onward, suddenly it was a flatter, wider set of ridges that was localized only to the forehead, with a full head of hair behind it. For some reason I’m always seeing people act like those are the same design, but to me the differences are glaringly obvious.

TV and movie productions are collaborative efforts undertaken by a huge number of creative people, and I don’t think any of them make their decisions for no reason. The “original creator” of the Klingons was Gene L. Coon, who had nothing to do with their portrayal in TMP.

Gene Roddenberry, I guess. IMO the guy really fell off when he turned Trek into a saturday morning cartoon show. But yeah, sweaty orc is right, just look at these monstrosities:

Yeah, I’m facetiously comparing the 1979 arguments over bumpy headed Klingons to the 2017 arguments over cone headed Klingons. What’s “new” keeps on changing, but the arguments about it stay eerily familiar.

NuTrek started when they did a full visual reboot, including completely changing the look of the Klingons: TMP.

Then it got worse, when they followed that up with a grimdark shoot-em-up that felt nothing like Trek. These people aren’t even fans of the show!

Gene would have loved Discovery because it let characters say “fuck” and there’s nothing and no one Gene hated more than the censors.

Don’t you also imagine future developments of the stories you enjoy? I’m already imagining what Starfleet Academy is going to give us, doesn’t matter if it’s a prequel or not. I just have to set my imagined version aside when the actual show airs.

That’s very true, Kelvin Kirk is much more obnoxious than I believe prime Kirk would have been as a cadet. I’m not even sure Kelvin Kirk has the necessary charm to argue his way out of trouble the way prime Kirk did. If the attack on Vulcan hadn’t interrupted, I could see the academy authorities coming down pretty hard on him.

This is how I see it. Reprogramming the test was a protest, and protests should be loud and obvious. A subtle change that made the test just barely passable would have just looked like academic dishonesty.

Any time they bleed red instead of fuchsia is an unforgivable violation of the sacred canon.

Kirk didn’t die in that movie. It looked like he did, but he can’t have. He wasn’t alone.

We’re there already. Look no further than your smart phone. You can’t explain that to someone from 100 years ago and have them come away with anything more meaningful than “magic”.

For the reward of instantaneous travel, I’m sure the Federation could muddle its way through amending a 100 year old law. The rest of the points don’t seem all that different than the complications we see our heroes regularly encounter exploring the galaxy. And none of them were enough to convince the crew of the Discovery to stop using the spore drive for the rest of the series.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Discovery anyway. Trek is full of miracle technologies that go conveniently forgotten. Janeway has no reason to be miffed given that she sat on an infinite speed drive herself, which had no downside that the doctor wouldn’t have been able to cure after it took them home.
