Jerry was kind of a asshole. I always root for Tom.
Jerry was just trying to survive. And get back at his tormentor.
Tom got beaten by (god I hate calling her this but it’s her character name) Mammy if he didn’t do his job.
They’re both psychotic, just like almost every other cartoon character. It wouldn’t be nearly as interesting to watch otherwise!
