Since when does the CDC have the authority to do this in the first place? If the CDC can’t effectively police actions during a global pandemic they sure as shit shouldn’t have to authority to control the terminology used in medical research.

I disagree with this, but I also disagree censoring research against feminist or LGBT groups, as it has been happening systematically.

The first books the Nazis burned were scientific research notes about trans people

Impressive that it is actually true, I thought it is an exaggeration. From Wikipedia:

On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party, came to power

On 6 May 1933, a group of students … the students proceeded to shout “Brenne Hirschfeld!” (“Burn Hirschfeld!”) while ransacking and vandalizing the Institute, tearing pictures from the walls, pouring inkwells onto carpets, and destroying exhibitions while the band played outside.

Yeah, when they teach about book burnings they never mention that fact. It also serves as a reminder that trans people are not just a modern phenomenon. The Nazis’ reasons for targeting trans people then are the same as right-wingers today, they look for a small, marginalized group and seize on existing prejudice to sow division and divide and conquer. The Nazis claimed trans people were a Jewish plot to weaken and destroy the Ayran race, and you can still see echos of that in some right-wing rhetoric today.

Hey there. Just letting you know that in general trans people and their allies absolutely do not want to be the center of public attention like this. They didn’t ask for it.

You’re right, there’s no good reason everyone should be so completely focused on them as a group. But that wasn’t their choice. That was the choice Nazis made when the first books they banned were about gender and sexuality.

That was the choice Nazis made when they spent the last decade and the foreseeable future demonizing and discriminating against transgender people.

Not because they asked for it. Not because they deserve it. But because they are the easiest target. Small in numbers. Complex by nature. Difficult to understand for the uninformed and the disinformed. “Different.”

They don’t consider themselves the center of the universe. Bigots do. Bigots have decided that transgender issues should be the thing everyone cares about right now. If you want to blame anyone, blame them.

It’s objectively true that the German nazi party first went after gender studies they didn’t like. It wasn’t called transgender at the time, but that’s what we call it today.

I’m a straight white dude and it takes very little thinking to see that trans people are being targeted as “the other” again. So, not kindly, go fuck yourself.

The CDC has instructed its scientists to retract or pause the publication of any research manuscript being considered by any medical or scientific journal, not merely its own internal periodicals

The scope is thankfully limited only to CDC scientists.

Not that this makes it good news by any stretch.

This is going to push research money squarely under the thumb of corporate control, which is of course the aim here. Privatize everything.

I do know scientists hate having their work paywalled or censored so I’d expect sci-hub to get a lot more popular real quick, but many will definitely self censor their official publications to keep their jobs til orange hitler shoots himself in a bunker somewhere.

I’m so fucking scared. They’ve inhibited our movement by fucking with passports, they’ve defined us as dishonest and dishonorable in the EO kick us out of the military, they’ve codified the notion that our gender identity constitutes sexual deviance and poses a threat to children, they’ve attacked proven life-saving care, with a focus on children and an impact on adults.

and now they’re trying to book-burn us out of existence.

this is systematic dehumanization, the track record of which is grim.

There’s just straight up not enough of us to do this on our own.

If people don’t start standing up for us, we’re fucked.

They’re refusing to issue passports to people who have had their gender marker legally changed, and some bigoted employees have been illegally confiscating documents (like birth certificates and social security cards) from those who try anyways.

So if your drivers license gender marker doesn’t match your birth certificate, they’ll refuse to issue the passport, and there’s a non-zero chance that the person behind the desk will steal both when you try to apply. So now you don’t have a passport and you need to go through the arduous process of getting all new ID paperwork just to prove who you are.

They are stealing the documents of trans people who go to get new documents including passports, leaving them without identifying paperwork (and identified by the authorities by the paperwork they lost) in a time where that is very convenient for the people in power, and threatening them with arrest if they ask for them back. In addition to what has been said already

From my sister about my 17y.o. trans niece: “Unfortunately, [niece] had a children’s passport (expired now), so she’s in the group who would not be able to get a passport anymore because her birth certificate and social security don’t currently match each other and don’t match her passport records.”

They confiscated it, wouldn’t give it back and were threatening to arrest her. There are also reports of trans people that were renewing their passports by mail and told they wouldn’t be getting them back.

Maybe it’s just the three trans people I know that are trying to leave the country right now, my brother’s family, and a bunch of family friends that come from a family of pilots and flight attendants.

I’m sure they are the only people having trouble in the whole country. Must be an isolated incident. … …

They are all located out west and in the Midwest, so maybe it’s just the Chicago office and the website. I don’t know if anybody has tried doing it through mail correspondence yet but that takes a little bit more time anyway.

All people need is a focus for resistance, a group or a leader to join. Most people are disgusted by this, and despite the election result I still believe most people would rather see trans people happy than suffering. And as the visibility of trans people increases, more and more cis people have been discovering that they know and care about trans people in their own lives. That’s why the hateful fringe feels it’s so urgent to shut trans rights down. They know they have to push people back into fear and silence before transphobia becomes uncommon. And they know they have to silence people talking about these matters to make organized resistance possible. But the quiet is largely people not knowing how to connect and resist, not a lack of desire to resist. It’s time for organized resistance and the first movement that gets going will find many supporters.

We also need some organization around getting LGBTQ+ refugees out of the USA and into other countries. The restrictions on passports are very ominous.

Also, for those leaking info, please do better than the OOP of the screen shot contained in this post. Not saying this is particularly sensitive and I don’t even know if their intent was to remain anonymous. But just a reminder to think about the little things like the “You forwarded this message at 11:17” because if anyone cares, they could easily find out who forwarded that email at that time. I would guess that most government entities could pretty easily come up with justification to fire anyone based on the public dissemination of intergovernmental emails, regardless of whether the contents were specifically noted as sensitive.

I only felt compelled to comment this because this is the second post I have seen in the last day or so with an identifying feature like that. There are a lot of government employees who probably can’t stomach working under this administration, and I get it. But there is an argument to make that those of you who oppose the administrations stances can do more good from within, or at least do your best to minimize the harm that would be caused by the bootlicking henchmen you will be replaced with.
